My Self Reflective Understanding on ChatGPT

What were your initial expectations about using ChatGPT?

The way I first came to know about ChatGpt was through my dad, who responded by its ability to quickly gather information and respond to changes in technology. After its release, ChatGpt quickly became a popular topic of conversation. Despite its popularity, I was hesitant to try it out. In fact, I tend to have an aversion to things that are trendy, and I also believed that my current tools, like Papago and Google Search, were more convenient to use. Additionally, most of my professors prohibited the use of ChatGpt for writing assignments and essays, so I had fewer opportunities to use it. However, during my EST 325 class, my professor recommended using ChatGpt, and that's when I first started using it.

When I first attempted to converse with ChatGpt, my initial impression was that it seemed "human-like." This was mainly because it was able to understand and respond to my questions, even when I made typos or errors. To be honest, it felt like a revolution. It made it easier for me to find detailed information on a topic I searched for, provided translations that sounded more natural than what I got from using Papago, and even checked grammar and context.

Do you have limitations or challenges you faced when using ChatGPT. How did you address or overcome them?

The limit of using ChatGPT is that it provides false links. When I asked ChatGPT for references to use in my essay, it provided me with a link, but when I clicked on it, the link didn't exist. Also, when I searched for the papers provided by ChatGPT, some of them did not exist.

This has become a global topic of discussion that ChatGPT is capable of telling lies. OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT, was co-founded in 2015 but even Elon Musk, who stepped down from the company in 2018, stated in an interview with Fox News on the 17th that "ChatGPT is being trained to tell lies" and said he would create "truth GPT" to counter it (Hill, 2023). So, I search for the title with copy and paste and search for google scholar or Stonybrook Library. These sites are good and more professional.

However, the more I used ChatGpt, the more I felt that it hindered my personal growth and abilities. In the past, I used to spend time searching for and reading papers and articles on Google to improve my skills. Now, all I had to do was ask ChatGpt for information and I would get an immediate answer. I believe that many people, including myself, will become increasingly reliant on AI like ChatGpt, and while it may be beneficial in the short term for completing tasks, it may not be good for us in the long term.
